Every time we get behind the wheel, we make countless decisions. Most seem small in the moment, but they can have life-changing consequences. That’s why Operation Safe Driver Week, taking place July 12-18, 2026, is such an important annual safety initiative.
At The Dave Fons Memorial Fund for the Advocacy of Truck Safety, our mission has always been clear: prevent crashes, save lives, and ensure no family experiences the heartbreak that ours has. Campaigns like Operation Safe Driver Week reinforce the message that roadway safety is a shared responsibility.
What is Operation Safe Driver Week?
Operation Safe Driver Week is a high-visibility traffic safety campaign led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). Throughout the week, law enforcement officers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico increase enforcement efforts targeting both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers who engage in unsafe driving behaviors.
Drivers observed violating traffic laws may receive warnings or citations, but the campaign is about much more than enforcement. Its ultimate goal is education, awareness, and preventing crashes before they happen.
This Year’s Focus: Reckless, Careless & Dangerous Driving
The 2026 campaign places special emphasis on identifying drivers who operate their vehicles recklessly or without proper care and attention.
Law enforcement will be watching for behaviors such as:
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Following too closely
- Aggressive driving
- Impaired driving (alcohol or drugs)
- Reckless or careless driving
- Other dangerous driving behaviors that put lives at risk
These aren’t just traffic violations. They’re decisions that can change lives forever.
Why This Matters
The Dave Fons Memorial Fund was created after our family lost Dave Fons in a preventable truck crash. We know firsthand that one unsafe decision on the road can leave a lifetime of grief for families, friends, coworkers, and entire communities.
Whether you’re driving:
- A passenger vehicle
- A commercial truck
- A work vehicle
- A motorcycle
Every person has the power to make our roads safer.
Truck drivers transport the goods we rely on every day. Passenger vehicle drivers share the same roads. Safety only works when everyone commits to driving responsibly.
Five Ways You Can Help Save Lives
✔ Put your phone away before you start driving.
✔ Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
✔ Leave plenty of following distance, especially around large trucks.
✔ Never drive impaired.
✔ Stay patient and focused from start to finish.
Small decisions behind the wheel can prevent devastating crashes.
