The Dave Fons Memorial Fund is proud to recognize Patrick Spicer of Ajax Paving Industries of Michigan as our first-ever Michigan Driver of the Year for 2025!

Patrick has spent 13 years as a professional truck driver, including the past five seasons with Ajax Paving. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated that safe driving is more than following the rules – it is a daily commitment to protecting his coworkers, fellow motorists, and the communities he serves.

Patrick was nominated by Ajax Paving Terminal Manager Philip J. Schuck, who has personally observed Patrick’s dedication to safety. According to Phil, Patrick consistently follows the company’s safety procedures while going above and beyond to ensure that his heavy-haul tractor and trailer remain in safe working condition.

Safety in a Specialized and Demanding Role

Patrick’s responsibilities require exceptional care and attention to detail. He transports approximately 50 tons of asphalt binder, a hazardous material that can reach temperatures exceeding 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Safely handling and transporting this material requires a HAZMAT endorsement, extensive safety checks, proper personal protective equipment, and constant awareness.

Patrick also understands that safety extends beyond his equipment and cargo. He remains alert to aggressive and distracted driving behaviors on Michigan’s freeways and takes a cautious, defensive approach behind the wheel.

Ajax Paving’s Samsara camera system allows management to review driving patterns and identify potential safety concerns. Since the system was introduced, Patrick has recorded little to no unsafe-driving alerts – further demonstrating the safe habits he practices every day.

Leading by Example

Patrick’s commitment does not stop with his own responsibilities. His professionalism and attention to safety set an example for Ajax Paving’s entire team of drivers. His supervisor expressed confidence that Patrick will continue supporting the company’s safety program and encouraging others to maintain the same high standards.

Professional truck drivers carry an enormous responsibility every time they enter the roadway. Drivers like Patrick show how preparation, patience, awareness, and respect for others can help prevent crashes and save lives.

About Our Safe Truck Driver of the Month Program

The Dave Fons Memorial Fund’s Safe Truck Driver of the Month program recognizes professional truck drivers who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to safety.

Each month, we select two exceptional truck drivers – one from Michigan and one from Florida – to receive a $250 award. We also recognize the drivers and their employers on our website and social media pages.

Moving forward, our annual Driver of the Year will be selected from the drivers recognized through our Safe Truck Driver of the Month program. Each monthly honoree will be eligible for this special year-end recognition, allowing us to celebrate a driver whose dedication, professionalism, and leadership exemplify the highest standards of truck safety.
